Aston Martin DBS… on planks

Right. We all dream of having top gear moments and driving our supercars on the Millau Bridge, driving from Calais to Saint Tropez in one go, or simply pushing a Veyron to its limits on the Nurburgring.

As eluded to before, my story is a top gear moment… with a twist.

When invited to a weekend in the posh Calais house where my in-laws square (my sister’s in laws) spend their weekends, I thought “right, I’ll call my supercar club, play the last wild card, and book the brand new Aston Martin DBS for the weekend”.  And show off a bit. Make my dad proud.  ‘atta boy.

My wife and I picked up the DBS from P1 on the friday afternoon.  We were welcomed by Neil who said:  “Xavier you need to know one or two things about this Aston Martin.  First the key (or ECU for Emotional Control Unit) is worth £1,000 so don’t lose it. Second, these two small bits under the front bumper are made of a special alloy of aluminium and carbon and are worth £5,000 each. Don’t break them. And of course I hoped you’ve brought your Tomtom as the Satnav is still the same”. Ok boss.

I start the car and hit the road to Calais. What a drive! We reach the house. I see the entrance. Narrow as planned but I knew my dad’s S-Type went through and is exactly the same width as the DBS. What I didn’t plan for was the shape of the kerb!! Picture this. It’s 11pm, the DBS is waking up the whole neighbourhood with its 6.0 liters and 510 bhp, whilst my brother in law rushes in the workshop to find some planks. My wife looked at me and said: “so you finally have your top gear moment!”. Next morning, we decided to take everyone for a ride in the DBS. I’ve posted pictures of this second moment of high concentration combined with a bit of embarrassment as my dear wife organises the planks and guides me out through the portal. It’s a weekend I’ll never forget, that’s for sure! Good fun still.
